Worked example

Say the start date is Friday, September 25, 2026. Count back 90 days, starting with the day before it as day 1. Day 90 is Saturday, June 27, 2026.

If you count the start date itself as day 1 (inclusive counting), day 90 is June 28, 2026 — one day later.

What this means for a Schengen stay

Counting back 90 days does not tell you whether you have used your 90 Schengen days. The rule looks back 180 days, not 90, and adds up every day you were inside the area in that window.

See why both border days count and how the 90/180 rule works.

Questions

How do you count 90 days back from a date?
Start the count the day after the start date, so the start date is day 0. 90 days before September 25, 2026 is Saturday, June 27, 2026.
Does the start date count as day 1?
Not in the usual count, where the start date is day 0. If you count it as day 1 (inclusive counting), day 90 is June 28, 2026 instead, one day later.
Do weekends and holidays count?
Yes. This is a count of calendar days, so every day counts, including weekends, public holidays and the extra day in a leap year. For business days you would need to skip those yourself.
Have I used my 90 Schengen days if I arrived 90 days ago?
Yes, if you have been inside since then: 90 days ago to today is 91 days counted inclusively, so you are already one day over. Always count every day in the last 180, both border days included.
