Schengen 90/180 rules by nationality

The 90/180 rule is the same for every visa-free visitor: no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across all 29 Schengen countries together. What differs by passport is paperwork, and a few old bilateral agreements that allow extra time in one country.

Facts checked 28 September 2026. Entry rules change. Confirm them with the official source linked in each section before you travel.

What is the same for everyone

  • The day you arrive and the day you leave both count as days in Schengen.
  • Moving between Schengen countries does not reset anything. There is no per-country allowance. Not sure which countries are in? See the Schengen countries list.
  • Leaving for a short trip does not reset the count either. Old days only stop counting when they fall outside the last 180 days.
  • Since 10 April 2026 the Entry/Exit System records every entry and exit and counts your days automatically.
