Is Andorra in the Schengen Area?

No — Andorra is not in the Schengen Area or the EU. But you can only get there through France or Spain, and there are no systematic Schengen exit checks at its borders, so you should assume days in Andorra will still count toward your 90.

In the Schengen Area: No

In the EU: No

Days count toward 90/180: Assume yes

Do days in Andorra count toward the 90/180 rule?

Legally, Andorra is outside Schengen. The UK government confirms Andorra is not in the Schengen area and that you must travel through France or Spain to get there.

In practice, Andorran press reported in April 2026 that an EU arrangement keeps only random checks, not systematic EES checks, at its borders. If your exit and re-entry are not recorded, EES will treat you as having stayed in Schengen. Unless you have a recorded exit, plan as if every day in Andorra counts.

Visiting Andorra

Because you must cross France or Spain, your passport has to meet the Schengen rules: issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least three months after you plan to leave. If you need a Schengen visa, get a multiple-entry one.

How EES applies

Your EES entry is recorded where you first enter Schengen, usually at an airport in Barcelona, Toulouse or elsewhere. According to Andorran press reports, crossings into Andorra are not systematically checked under EES, so do not count on a recorded exit. Check with the French or Spanish authorities if it matters for your dates.

Not a reliable Schengen break

Because there is no airport and no systematic exit check, Andorra does not work as a place to wait for Schengen days. Choose somewhere with a recorded exit, such as the UK, Ireland or Morocco.

Common questions

Does time in Andorra count toward Schengen?
Andorra is legally outside Schengen, but crossings from France and Spain are not systematically checked, so your exit may never be recorded. Assume the days count unless you have a recorded exit and re-entry.
Do I need a Schengen visa to visit Andorra?
If your passport needs a Schengen visa, yes, because you must travel through France or Spain to reach Andorra. Get a multiple-entry visa so you can return through Schengen.
Is Andorra in the EU?
No. Andorra is not an EU member and not in the Schengen Area, though it uses the euro. Its only road links are to France and Spain, both Schengen countries.
