Is Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Schengen Area?

No — Bosnia and Herzegovina is not in the Schengen Area or the EU. Days in Sarajevo, Mostar or anywhere else in the country do not count toward your Schengen 90 days in any 180.

In the Schengen Area: No

In the EU: No

Days count toward 90/180: No

Facts checked 5 October 2026. Entry rules change and differ by passport. Confirm them with the official source linked in each section, or your own government's travel advice, before you travel.

Do days in Bosnia and Herzegovina count toward the 90/180 rule?

No. Bosnia and Herzegovina is an EU candidate country, not a member of the EU or Schengen, and counts visitors' days separately.

Visiting on a visa-free passport

British passports get 90 days in six months, separate from Schengen. Register your address within 72 hours; hotels normally do this. Check the rules for your own passport.

How EES applies

EES is not used in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Crossing from Croatia is a Schengen exit, logged by EES, and coming back is a new entry. The coastal road through Neum crosses the border twice.

A short hop from the Croatian coast

Mostar is about two hours from Split or Dubrovnik, so Bosnia and Herzegovina is a common choice for travellers in Croatia who need time outside Schengen.

Common questions

Is Mostar in Schengen?
No. Mostar is in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is outside the Schengen Area. A trip from Croatia to Mostar is a Schengen exit, and days spent there do not count toward your 90.
Does driving through Neum count as leaving Schengen?
Yes. The Croatian coastal road crosses a short strip of Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum, so you leave and re-enter Schengen. Since 2022 the Pelješac Bridge lets you bypass it.
How long can I stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina?
British passports get 90 days in six months, counted separately from Schengen, according to UK government advice. Check your own government's advice for other passports.
